An exciting new era of information technology and embedded systems is upon us. With the advent of virtual computing, cloud computing, high performance mobile platforms and scalable networks, productivity growth in this era will continue at a staggering pace. An integral part of this era is the application of embedded systems and architectures for communications and control. Embedded systems are on a trajectory toward billions of embedded devices in a wide range of applications, many of which include links between individual embedded devices. These applications will range in criticality from non-critical consumer electronics, to safety-critical automotive, aerospace and industrial automation and security-critical communications and Defense systems. With the massive increase in availability and utilization of this new technologies in virtually all private, business and government enterprises worldwide, system vulnerabilities are also increasing.
